OCR: Issac Newton's theories "proved that if you knew the position and momentum of every atom in the universe you could predict the future of every atom (in other words, the future of everything). This was used to "prove" that free will and creativity were an illusion. The universe is, they said, a giant pool table with the balls (atoms) in motion and all their future paths determined by the laws of science. This wild idea profoundly changed the way Western man viewed himself. Schools of thought like cultural determinism, biological determinism, and behavioral determinism descended on us. We were told our intuition and inner sense were all an illusion. We need listen only to the objectivity of science.
